Experience

 

Matthew T. Charles joined the firm in early 2008 and, in recognition of his untiring service, the firm's name was changed to Concannon & Charles in 2016.  Mr. Charles is the principal attorney in the firm's Ocean City, New Jersey office. 

 

Mr. Charles focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, primarily in the areas of product liability, sports and recreation law, intellectual property and trade secret litigation.  Mr. Charles also includes corporate law, employment, real estate and criminal defense.  

 

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Charles had his own practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, focusing primarily in civil litigation, criminal defense, estate administration, business formation, tax and real estate.  He worked for the Pennsylvania Criminal Defense Clinic for Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he provided representation of indigent clients in criminal cases. 

 

Mr. Charles is a certified scuba diver, a sports fan, musician and photographer.  He and his wife Kelly live in Ocean City, New Jersey, where they raise their rambunctious twin sons and dog Harlan.

Recent Matters

 

 

  • As co-counsel with Mr. Concannon, successfully defended numerous personal injury and wrongful death cases in New Hampshire, Texas, California, Florida and North Carolina.

  • Negotiated a $1.55 million settlement in a breach of contract case.

  • Negotiated a $70,000 settlement for a client/defendant in a complex fraudulent transfer case where the plaintiff was seeking to enforce a prior judgment for $1.5 million.

  • Defended criminal defendants charged with various summary offenses, misdemeanors and felonies, including DUI/DWI, drug possession, simple assault, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault and forgery.

  • Served as outside counsel for businesses both nationally and internationally.

  • Transactional work, including preparation of contracts and liability waivers for clients in the sports and recreation industries, and contract negotiations for the sale and lease of residential and commercial real estate.

  • Advised businesses and employees regarding employment matters and employment litigation.

  • Acted as assistant project leader for the Apollo F-1 Engine Recovery Project for Explorer Consulting, LLC and  Bezos Expeditions.  Successfully managed all aspects of the project with David Concannon and participated in the search expedition.  Co-recipient of The Explorers Club Citation of Merit for “an outstanding feat of exploration” in successfully locating and recovering the center F-1 rocket engine from Apollo 11.  For more information see http://www.bezosexpeditions.com/updates.html.

  • Advised clients on U.S. and international import/export issues.

  • Successfully defended a fraudulent credit card collection action where the claims were dismissed with prejudice.
